Talking about Our Private Castro & Mission Food Tour
I went to San Francisco and found hidden gem more impressive than the Golden Gate Bridge
Talking about Our Private Castro & Mission Food Tour
“Food and an authentic deep dive into San Francisco’s heritage can be explored during a walking tour with the aptly named Stretchy Pants group. The Mission district saunter provides a bite of life in the mainly Latin-American area, channelling the important stories its food tells. The message is clear, as guide Robert Magee states: “This area has always been a bastion of resistance to the establishment.”.”

Golden Gate, Hidden Grogu and tea tastings: A weekend in San Francisco
Talking about our Chinatown: Dim Sum & Tea Tour
“Food plays a part in any destination experience. And, on this trip I got a taste of San Francisco’s Chinatown during a Stretchy Pants Food Tour to sample some dim sum, tea and fortune cookies.
While the food on this tour was amazing, the highlight for me was the tea-tasting at Vital Tea Leaf. Not only was it a great way to learn the history of tea, but I got to discover the difference between varieties, and to taste some teas I’d never even heard of.
It was a great way to wash down the dim sum and Peking duck from earlier in the tour.
Our guide ended the tour by taking us to what has to be the best lookout spot in all of the city.
Located on top of the SFMTA Vallejo Street Garage (apologies to the lovely resident who I met at this spot who said it was the best hidden secret in San Francisco!) This quiet carpark area has breathtaking views. You can see parts of the harbour, and much of the city. Including the church that featured in Sister Act 2. I couldn’t leave this unmentioned.”

My tour of San Francisco’s counterculture: 60 years after Grateful Dead’s debut
Talking about our Private Castro & Mission Food Tour
“The following day, explore the Mission District, a neighbourhood that pulses with colour, culture and creativity. Murals spill across building walls, telling stories of community, resistance and celebration, while streets hum with the energy of cafes and taquerias.
The best way to experience it is on a food tour, winding through the neighbourhood’s iconic spots and sampling fresh food. I did the Castro & Mission Food Tour with Stretchy Pants Food Tours (stretchy-pants.com; from $99pp). Each bite offers a glimpse into the Mission’s vibrant culinary scene, from Latino to Asian influences and beyond.
The tour finishes in the Castro, one of the city’s most historically significant neighbourhoods, long celebrated as a centre of LGBTQ+ culture and activism. Its streets are lined with colourful Victorian homes and rainbow flags flutter from balconies. The historic Twin Peaks bar sits beside the Castro Theatre, a landmark currently under renovation.
“This was the first gay bar in the country to have full-length windows,”says guide Robert Magee. “Before that, people had to hide inside bars with small or no windows at all, like speakeasies. This was the first gay bar in the country to be completely open• so literally, coming out.”
